Case Study 1

Net Zero
Strategy

Background

The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Quality Assurance Programs (RCPAQAP) are world leaders in the provision of external quality assurance (EQA) for pathology laboratories.

  • RCPAQAP are based out of their St. Leonards purpose-built office and laboratory. The world class facility includes several specialist spaces including molecular and virtual microscopy suite.
  • Over the years, RCPAQAP has proactively implemented a number of independent sustainability initiatives and recently there has been a growing demand for ESG related information from customers and stakeholders.

We were appointed by RCPAQAP to assist them in determining their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions baseline and co-create a net zero emissions reduction strategy and roadmap.

Strategy

Through our co-creation process we partnered with the client to develop a staged approach to helping them first reach carbon neutrality by 2025 and thereon helping them achieve Net Zero status.

Our approach included taking into consideration initiatives RCPAQAP had already undertaken and augmenting them with new strategies to help them first measure their carbon footprint in real time leveraging sensor technology and achieving RESET Indoor Air Quality Certification. We will help them measure their Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions leveraging technology, purchase carbon offsets, up-skill their employees and help RCPAQAP communicate effectively with their stakeholders on their Net Zero journey progress and results.

Solution

Novo has installed data sensors to capture RCPAQAP’s Electricity, Water usage and Air Quality data in real time.

In addition to real time monitoring of electricity & water usage to inform their baseline carbon footprint, the data will help RCPAQAP take corrective actions in real time to help reduce their energy and water usage.

We are also helping RCPAQAP achieve RESET certification to provide greater transparency on the performance of its workplace and laboratories.

Net Zero Journey

Phase 1
net zero journey phase1

Real Time energy usage monitoring.

Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions measurement for FY22 or CY21.

Scope 3 GHG emissions measurement for FY22 or CY21 including a full scope 3 analysis and relevance test.

Phase 2
net zero journey phase2

Net zero emissions scenario modelling aligned to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Corporate Net Zero Standard.

Development of a net zero emissions reduction strategy, based on the chosen net zero emissions scenario – providing a roadmap of actions, with a corresponding prioritisation matrix to match.

Phase 3

Staff training and education on climate science, policy and all things net zero – including raising awareness of how staff can contribute positively to the organisation’s net zero strategy.

Sustainability
Roadmap

Background

Novo was appointed by one of Australia’s largest industrial investment trusts to assist them in developing their sustainability strategy and roadmap for their flagship industrial asset in Sydney.

  • The flagship asset was acquired by the client in 2021 with two anchor tenants totally occupying circa 60,000 sqm of warehouse space.
  • Post initial stabilisation period, the client was seeking to develop a Sustainability Roadmap that will be used to execute on its vision to transform the asset into an industrial asset with segment leading sustainability credentials.
  • In developing the Sustainability Roadmap, we were asked to align our recommendations to client’s corporate Sustainability Framework where feasible.

Our recommendations provide a holistic view of the proposed sustainability related improvements to the site, ROI and project execution plan to assist client to make an informed decision

Strategy

Through our co-creation process we partnered with the client to conduct extensive discovery to fully understand key environmental outcomes as well as business goals they were looking to achieve.

Based on our understanding of their current state and desired project outcomes, we developed a bespoke Sustainability Roadmap creation process for this project with related activities detailed as part of our project scope.

Sustainability Roadmap Creation Process

Sustainability Roadmap

Solution

Based on our Sustainability Road Map Creation Process, we developed a detailed scope for the project that included several activities to inform our recommendations:

  • Discovery meeting with Senior Property Manager
  • Existing tenant ESG strategy and priorities desktop research
  • Tenant workshop & Tenant Sustainability Survey
  • Conduct onsite inspection
  • Review existing Technical Due Diligence Report (TDD)
  • Review Group Sustainability Framework report

We have designed a 2.5MW Photo Voltaic (PV) system with network metering system to provide the site and tenants with a low-cost source of green electricity.

  • $0 Capital investment
  • Roof space Rental income to landlord
  • Profit share per kWh produced by system back to landlord.
